A Healthy Waistline Is More Than Just Your Clothing Size

Next time you find yourself struggling to put on a pair of jeans that fit you recently, stop and think about the fact that weight gain doesn’t only impact your appearance and clothing size. With body weight on the rise in the United States, it’s important to know that obesity is now tied with smoking as the two leading causes of preventable deaths. Not only is this statistic surprising, it is also important to note that while death rates from smoking declined, the death rates from obesity have actually risen.

What Is The Cause Of These Deaths?

On its own, obesity can cause a number of problems when it comes to your health. These risks can include anything from high blood pressure or cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, breathing problems, and anxiety. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can link a risk of 13 different kinds of cancer to patients who are obese. Obesity is defined by the ratio of your height and weight, a number called BMI (body mass index). People with a BMI of over 30 are considered obese. With over one third of adults in the United States being obese, and an average of 17% of US children, this trend is clearly one that’s on the rise. 

What Are These 13 Types Of Cancer?

While obesity is a contributing factor to many different types of cancer, the types of cancers on the rise in obese Americans indicated by the study include breast cancer in postmenopausal women, kidney and thyroid, esophagus, liver, gallbladder, colon and rectum, upper stomach, pancreas, uterus, ovary, and meningioma and multiple myeloma. Not only were obesity rates tied to a rise in these types of cancers, the rates of incidence were actually shown to rise in the same proportion to how overweight the study participants were. This shows that for every pound you are overweight, your chances of being diagnosed with cancer rises.
