Ovarian Cancer Awareness

You would have to be pretty out of touch to not realize October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - but did you know that September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month? And that sums up a disturbing issue...when it comes to Ovarian Cancer most women aren't informed.

As part of their "Break the Silence" Campaign, the NOCC (National Ovarian Cancer Coalition) commissioned a survey to gauge women's understanding of ovarian cancer. The survey revealed that 85% of women did not know ovarian cancer's symptoms and that 82% of women had not spoken with their doctors about ovarian cancer. Until there is an accurate early detection test for ovarian cancer, awareness of ovarian cancer's subtle symptoms is an important key to earlier detection.

These are disturbing statistics to us at The Woman's Clinic, knowledge is the key to taking control of your health at every LifeStage.  Don't hesitate to discuss your concerns with your Doctor at your next visit and educate yourself now. We want you to know the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer which can include:

  • Persistant Bloating
  • Pelvic or Abdominal Pain
  • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
  • Persistant Fatigue
  • Upset Stomach or Heartburn - that is not helped by dietary changes

Persistance is the key to the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer. On any given day a perfectly healthy woman can experience any one of the symptoms. But be aware of your body and if the symptoms don't subside you should see your doctor

What type of early detection can we who have it in our family get? ultrasound? CT? or do we have to wait til we are having symptoms then we all know that by that time it's TOO LATE. My aunt is currently undergoing chemo for ovarian cancer and my grandmother(her mother) died of ovarian cancer.
