Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month.  The steps to prevention are easy and provide other health benefits; but ignoring the threat can have devastating consequences. What can you do?

  • Calcium 1,000 mg - 1,200 mg daily with vitamin D 400-800 mg daily  
  • weight bearing exercises like walking, running and lifting weights
  • no more than 1 alcoholic beverages per day
  • do not smoke

To find out if you are at risk discuss your lifestyle and family history with your physician, you may be scheduled for a bone density exam.
