Mammography in the News

There are many mentions of mammograms in the news in just the last week. New reports can be exciting and confusing all at the same time. But, the bottom line is that mammograms are important to your overall health strategy. It is important to read and digest any new information and even MORE important to discuss your questions and concerns with your OB/GYN. We have added the newest, state of the art technology to help you feel more confident.

Here are the highlights of two of the biggest stories this week:

  • ABC News is reporting that the longest-running study of breast cancer screening claims to prove that regular mammograms save lives - and more lives than previously thought. Yearly mammograms prevent cancer deaths, and the number of lives saved increases over time.  The researchers found that seven years of mammograms made for 30 percent fewer breast cancer deaths years down the road, when compared with women who didn't receive mammograms.
  • There is a new screening method being studied in Europe based on technology developed by a company in Israel. The new screener uses infrared beams and heat and doesn't require any machinery touching the breast. The EU is expected to approve the use of the new scanner next year, which will allow for a larger test group to be studied.  There is increasing pressure in the UK to begin screening of women under 50 and this technology boasts clearer results in that younger age group.
